Businesses choosing premises should make sure that the location they select is secure, if they want to drive down their insurance premiums.

According to the Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC), effective security is not only the key to cheaper insurance, it can also help ensure business continuity and keep crime costs down.

A spokesperson for the BCRC, Adrian Platts, said that ensuring workplaces and storage spaces are secure does not have to be expensive.

“Many security measures are cost free and are related to ‘practice and procedures’ within the business, for example removing climbing aids or making sure visitors are properly checked in and out of the building,” he added.

Opting for units without adequate security could prove to be a false economy, as being a victim of crime can cost businesses thousands.

Previous research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) found that two-thirds of small firms were victims of crime in 2010.

Such incidents cost the businesses involved an average of £3,000 each, highlighting the importance of opting for secure industrial units.
