Education can reduce energy use

The British Council for Offices has urged organisations to educate staff on energy consumption.
Paul Edwards, head of sustainability at the organisation, said it was a case of making sure that everybody was up to speed with the measures that can be put in place to make the building more eco-friendly.
“If you educate your staff, and if the building owners educate the agents that run it and their tenants, you can bring them up to speed on what they can or can’t do,” he explained.
He highlighted a number of studies which indicate that 10-20% of energy usage could be saved purely by changing current behaviours. This could result in significant savings for businesses.
Mr Edwards also suggested that employers should encourage workers to turn off lights, switch off computers and turn off machinery which does not need to be on.
