Businesses looking to rent may be powerless to prevent staff from bringing their own devices into the workplace.

The rapid growth of laptops, smartphones and tablet computers and the falling price of new technology has led to many employees taking their personal devices to work, according to Blue Coat Systems.

As more and more people use tablets and smartphones in their personal life they want to be able to use technology they are comfortable with in the office.

Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of marketing EMEA at the firm, explained that the idea of a company trying to dictate exactly what devices people use for their work has now become “impossible”.

A recent Damovo UK poll of IT directors found that 68 per cent of IT directors believe the increased use of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, had increased the amount they spent worrying about the security of their organisation’s ICT.
