Start-ups to be offered cheap rents on government buildings

Prime minister David Cameron is expected to announce a new scheme designed to help start-up firms secure property.
Under the plans, the coalition will be offering unused government buildings, of which there are 550 in the UK, at cheap rental rates to new businesses.
Of the properties expected to be made available, there are 300 offices that are currently sitting “idle” or being under-used.
The one-year scheme may see some offices and government buildings that have remained empty for as long as a decade being used to create new jobs in the UK.
“The first priority for the ones we are not using is to sell them off but, in the meantime, many are going to be sitting idle. So let’s match the capacity we have got with the need that is out there,” Mr Cameron will say in a speech in the north-east.
“Let’s provide office space where we can to those who can use it.”
The prime minister hopes the scheme will support the UK’s “grafters, doers, hard-workers and entrepreneurs” at a time of economic uncertainty.
