Open office space ‘key to creativity’

Businesses looking to rent should consider an open workplace without cramped cubicles, as a new study has found crowded conditions can hinder creativity.

Research published in the journal Psychological Science shows that “thinking outside the box”, a term often bandied around the office, could actually be true.

Scientists carried out a series of tests on volunteers to assess whether they worked better in open or closed conditions.

Their findings indicated that those who completed tasks outside of a five by five foot cardboard box performed much better.

People outside of the box were far more creative than the others and those who walked around freely, instead of in a straight line, were able to come up with more ideas.

Dr Angela Leung, of Singapore Management University, said: “Our experiments demonstrated for the first time some metaphors work by activating psychological processes conducive for generating previously unknown and therefore creative ideas.”
