Sweet smell of success in Nelson
A Nelson-based retro sweet shop is enjoying rapid expansion thanks to increasing global demand for its old fashioned home-made range of confectionaries.
Happy Sweet Shop (www.happysweetshop.co.uk) started initially as a home-based business, but its early success meant that professional workspace was soon required. “We always planned to move into business premises,” comments founder Simon Brooke, who prefers to be known as ‘The Sweet Meister’. “And so the superb location of the Bizspace business centre at the Lomeshaye Business Village, coupled with the flexibility of workspace and tenure, made it a perfect choice.
“Our mouth watering range of sweets are meant to take you back to your childhood days and we now have a range of several hundred lines, with on-line customers as far away as Australia. As our business has grown in size we’ve taken advantage of the flexibility provided by Bizspace to expand the space we occupy. We’ve even been able to open a small sweet shop counter in the centre’s reception.
“Clearly the recession has not reduced people’s appetites for traditional confectionary such boiled sweets, sherbets, coconuts mushrooms and even mints balls and our next phase of expansion will be providing charity and fundraising products and starting to sell our products at the counters of local stores, cinemas and retail outlets.”
“Happy Sweet Shop moved in during the summer of 2008,” comments Kirstie McClelland, Bizspace centre manager. “And it’s been a real pleasure to have provided them with the flexibility to expand their business as we are finding that the current financial climate is fuelling increased demand for flexible workspace from all business sectors. Many businesses are now finding it harder to make any long term plans and the flexibility we provide removes the headache of long term financial commitments, whilst allowing businesses greater freedom to upsize, downsize or even relocate to meet the demands of their market.”
