Empty Property Rate Relief Extension Receives Cautious Welcome From Bizspace
The extension of empty property rate (EPR) relief until 2011, as announced in Chancellor Alistair Darling’s pre-budget report, has received a cautious welcome from Bizspace, one of the North West’s largest suppliers of flexible business space, with more than 25 business centres in the region. Bizspace believes that only a permanent extension will have a long term positive impact on the provision of flexible workspace for small businesses.
“We have been campaigning for an extension of EPR relief beyond the 2009/2010 financial year and recently sponsored a reception, organised by the Business Centre Association, at the House of Commons,” comments Bizspace’s managing director, Gareth Evans. “So, whilst the news that EPR relief has been extended for a further twelve months is very welcome, we really need a permanent extension to rate relief to enable us to make serious plans for the future development of new space to support small business.
“We’ve opened more than 50 business centres offering flexible space to the SME sector during the past three years and the demand for flexibility can only continue to increase, following the economic experience of the last 18 months.
The extension to EPR relief will certainly help us to provide the best possible flexible workspace facilities in our existing centres to an increasing number of small businesses and start-ups. However, we have seen the cessation of new developments in the sector as a result of the EPR tax and unfortunately this lack of development will continue unless permanent relief is granted. We need the Government to commit to a long term policy of EPR relief so that the flexible workspace industry can plan on a longer term basis to be able to provide sufficient appropriate workspace to support UK plc and its dynamic SME sector through the next decade of the economic cycle.”
