Business Women’s Week: Emma Long’s advice and heroes

National Business Women's Week is "To honour the contributions of working women and employers who support working women” Business and Professional Women’s Foundation

It’s National Business Women’s Week and it’s time to celebrate the contribution women make to our company. You have already met our Head of People and Culture Samantha Hill and it’s now time to introduce you to our second wonder woman to learn her dreams, superpowers and challenges throughout her career.

Today’s BizSpace wonder woman is Emma Long, our Commercial Director. Emma has been part of the BizSpace family from the beginning and her passion for the company shines through with each working minute. She has helped shape BizSpace into the company it is today with her constant focus on the achievement of pre-agreed goals and targets. Her caring nature, drive to innovate and to encourage others as much as possible is what makes her so memorable to everyone she meets. Emma has even volunteered as a mentor for Aspire where she was responsible for ensuring development and guidance for a young lady who had just graduated and now worked within an SME organization. So please meet our very lovely Emma Long…

What was your dream job when you were younger?

I was between two careers as a child – my love for animals made me want to become a vet, but I also wanted to be a pop star so a singer on top of the pops was pretty high on the career list!

Who do you look up to?

I look up to two people – my lovely mum and Elizabeth Garret Anderson, who was an English physician and suffragist as well as the first woman to qualify in Britain as a physician and surgeon. She was so devoted, driven and passionate about becoming a doctor that she didn’t let anything get in the way of that dream. Even when she was denied admittance into many medical schools and so many people were against women becoming doctors, she fought against it all, achieving so much for herself and many other women in Britain.

What is your superpower?

My superpower is x-ray vision – I can see into everyone’s hearts – I am a people person and can get a clear understanding of someone straight away!

What’s been the toughest challenge in your career?

My toughest challenge in my career to date – has been over the last 30 years – challenging myself to understand my weaknesses, opportunities and areas I can give something back.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self?

I would say – have fun, fun, fun, fun, fun and more fun!! Oh and buy property early…

What advice would you give to young women today?

I would say, believe in yourself, listen and learn from others and always set yourself challenges.  Draw a picture in your mind of the ideal situation, place, environment you would like in five years and set yourself achievable goals to ensure you can reach it. Always take yourself back to the vision in your mind to keep you going through tough times.

We are proud of our BizSpace Family and the strong community we have built. It is important to showcase the talent that walks among our pool of staff and how they make up our brand’s name.
