Hooton raises almost £1k for cancer appeal

A fundraising event at the Bizspace business centre in Hooton managed to raise more than £900 in aid of a four-year old's cancer appeal.

Our business centres in the North West have spent February raising money for charity, with one collecting more than £900 for a little girl fighting cancer.

Four-year-old Olivia May Phillips was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer in October 2015. After more tests, traces of cancer were also found in her lungs.  Because of this news, her family, from Ellesmere Port, were told that surgery was not an option. Since her diagnosis Olivia has been having chemotherapy at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool but this has not been working as well as her doctors had hoped.

Now her parents, Jon and Louise Phillips, are hoping that a cutting-edge treatment called Nanoknife, which uses an electric current to destroy inoperable tumours, may help her beat cancer. However, the procedure is only carried out at one hospital in the UK – The Princess Grace in London – and treatment costs £13,200 a session.

One of our customers – Amtec Resources – a specialist recruitment agency based at our business centre in Hooton, heard about Olivia’s story on social media and decided to help raise money for her treatment. The staff approached Vicki Buckingham, Centre Administrator at Hooton, and they worked together to organise a fundraising event.

Valentine-themed fundraising events

On Friday 12 February, customers at Hooton Business Centre were encouraged to dress in Valentine’s Day-themed colours and donate £1 to Olivia’s fund. On the same day, we held a two-hour speed networking event in the centre’s Oak Room, giving customers the chance to make connections while raising money for a good cause.

People attending could enjoy tea, coffee and strawberry champagne in return for a donation. There was also a raffle with a number of prizes up for grabs including vouchers, wine, chocolates and photo shoots.

Vicki says: “It’s been a joint venture and the response has been overwhelming. The total raised was a whopping £924.75. The girls from Amtec have done a wonderful job in raising this amount to help Olivia in her fight against cancer.” If you would like to donate money to Olivia May Phillips, this fundraiser is finished.

Other Bizspace centres in the North West also saw Valentine’s Day as a great date to raise money for good causes. Centres in Lancashire and Merseyside held Valentine-themed coffee mornings, raising £100 for Macmillan Cancer Support, with tempting treats including themed cakes, strawberries, tea and coffee and raffle prizes.
