Leeds learning centre top of class

A tuition company based at our Brooklands Court Business Centre in Leeds is achieving fantastic success helping young people in the area achieve their learning goals.

The Kip McGrath Education Centre for South Leeds is run by director Kes Sowerby, a former high school and primary school teacher. He and the five other teachers he employs help 100 students each week to work to personalised learning plans.

Kip McGrath is an international tuition franchise with more than 200 centres throughout the UK. In 2013 Kes decided to take on a franchise, following his dream of starting his own business, and now works teaching English and Maths to children from age five up to GCSE level.

“I’ve held various different jobs in education over more than 20 years, and so this seemed to be ideally suited to my skillset,” he says.

“It felt like the right time to start afresh, so I decided to set up the centre.”

Sustained business growth

Kes started in a small unit at Brooklands Court.  He chose the business centre for its location within his catchment area, and the safety and convenience it offered customers.

“People are dropping off their children for tuition, so security is very important – as are the spacious car parking facilities,” he says.

“We also offer evening and weekend sessions, so it was vital for us to have 24/7 access to the unit, to welcome customers at any time.”

The simple nature of the billing, which is inclusive of all utilities, also appealed to Kes.

Kes built his customer base from scratch, through online advertising and maildrops. He also works with various faith groups and now gets lots of word of mouth recommendations. Business grew so much that last year Kes and the team moved to a new, larger unit within Brooklands Court.

“It’s an open plan layout with banks of five children’s desks and PCs, making it easy for the teachers to work with small groups,” he explains.

“This unit is just down the corridor from our previous workspace so the move was simple, and the Bizspace staff were very helpful throughout the process.”

Currently more than 100 children each week visit the centre to develop their skills. Each child is assessed and a personalised learning programme is developed so that each individual works to attain their own specific targets.
